Imagine my shock when I saw Valentino’s 2014 Couture line and it was really modest. In fact, some of the dresses look like futuristic abayas – they’re so minimalist that they look like anorexic versions of Dubai Abayas with their ever intricate embroidery and sparkly swarovski crystals. These are the type of clothes that Muslim designers would make if they weren’t scared no one would buy a plain abaya. Somehow when Valentino makes it, everyone craves it. It’s the Valentino effect, hopefully more Muslim designers will start to adopt these sleek minimalist styles that are more about the fabric, cut and sewmanship rather than anything else.
